How to Help Maintain Your Carpet's Good Looks for Longer....... Carpets will always get dirty under normal everyday use and looking after your carpet and maximising its good looks is dependent on the level of simple maintenance which is applied to the carpet. The lasting good looks of your carpet depends on attention to these few simple, easy-to-follow steps...... Step 1 Vacuum Frequently The best way to reduce soil accumulation and prolong the life of your carpet is to vacuum frequently, especially in those areas where high levels of traffic are common (i.e.Hall, Lounge etc). For all cut pile carpets you should really use an upright cleaner to help disturb and lift soil from the pile of the carpet. Loop pile carpets are best maintained using a suction cleaner to minimise snagging and damaging the loop pile as the loops can easily be pulled away from the backing of the carpet. Step 2 Clean Areas Of Frequent Use The most used areas of the carpet such as entrances, doorways, lounges, etc., are going to collect dirt much faster than other areas of the carpet. Cleaning these areas frequently prevents the dirt from spreading to the rest of the house. Step 3 Attend To Stains And Spills Immediately Most stains and spills are far easier to remove when attended to immediately. Step 4 Periodic Professional Cleaning Airborne particles of dust will eventually leave a thin dull film on even unused parts of the carpet. To help overcome this soiling, professional cleaning of the carpet is a must. Carpets perform best when properly cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner using specially formulated cleaners developed for your carpet. It is important that you act quickly upon encountering a spill. Do not leave it to later!!! Depending on the spill- Absorb the liquid spills by blotting (DO NOT RUB) with absorbent cloths or plain paper towels, or scrape lightly to loosen a hard or crusty type stain, or scoop up soft substances with the dull edge of a spoon or vacuum any loose particles that can be readily removed from the area. Sponge warm water onto the spill, blot the spill firmly using a sponge or cloth. Repeat this procedure several times, rinsing out the sponge or cloth frequently. Take care not to over wet the carpet and do not walk on the carpet until thoroughly dry. This is very important. If the substance is not removed by the use of warm water, locate the substance on the Spot Removal Guide below and follow the directions carefully. Before removing the stain, test treatments on an inconspicuous part of the carpet for possible colour change. Again this is very important. The final process on carpets after following the wetting and blotting procedure should be as follows: Place 5-6 layers of kitchen roll on the affected area and place on top a heavy book such as a telephone directory. Allow to dry over 2-4 hours. The kitchen roll will absorb any stain in the base fibres. Hopefully, this will do the trick, but the best advice is just be careful. |
